Phrasal Verb: Call Off

Have you ever had to change plans at the last minute? Perhaps you’ve cancelled a picnic because of rain or decided not to watch a movie after all. These moments are perfect for using “call off”.

“Call off” is a phrasal verb. It means to cancel something that was planned.
We use it when something will not happen anymore.

It is often used for events like:

  • a party

  • a meeting

  • an investigation

  • a game

Usually, someone decides to stop the event before it starts.

Weather example:
We called off the picnic because it started to rain.
(This means we canceled the picnic because of the rain.)

(This means they stopped the business talks.)

(This means they stopped looking for her because she was safe.)

Social example:
